My A/C Smells Like Stinky Cheese
Vieux Boulogne is a cheese from the French region of Nord-Pas de Calais. It tastes great, but is so stinky that it has been banned from public transportation in France. If your car’s A/C smells like a fragrant cheese, you probably have mold growing in your A/C system.
When your A/C system is turned on, it produces condensation that collects inside the A/C housing. The condensation should naturally drain out, resulting in a small puddle of water that you might see under your car from time to time. If the evaporator drain tube gets clogged, it creates a moist environment that encourages mold, spores, fungi, bacteria, and viruses to grow in your evaporator core. The blower motor forces air through the contaminated evaporator core and out the vents in the passenger compartment.
To eliminate these odors, we use specialty cleaners to remove blockages from the drain tube, and kill anything growing in your A/C system. This service usually runs between $99 and $149 depending on the difficulty of performing these services on your vehicle.
