My A/C Isn't Blowing Cold

If your car’s A/C system works, but doesn’t blow cold enough, then the system is low on refrigerant. Since the A/C system is sealed, a low refrigerant level indicates that there’s a leak in the system, which may lead to premature wear of the A/C system components. To find and repair the leak we perform a “Reclaim, Test, and Recharge Service” of the refrigerant in your A/C system.

Our 3 Step Recharge Service Includes:

  1. Reclaim – Our A/C machine reclaims all the refrigerant out of the A/C system to prevent it from going into the atmosphere and damaging the ozone layer.
  2. Test – We put a -29 PSI vacuum on the system for 20 minutes to ensure the system won’t leak under a vacuum and to remove any moisture in the system.
  3. Recharge – If it passes the pressure test, we then recharge the system with R-134a or R-1234yf refrigerant to the manufacturer’s specified level. We also add oil to the A/C system to lubricate the compressor, and a UV activated dye to help us detect leaks.

Hunting Down Leaks

The leaks in an A/C system are tiny and can be hard to identify. If a leak develops once we have pressurized the system, we will look for where the dye has sprayed out of the vehicles A/C system using a UV light. This allows us to identify the leaking part so a repair can be made to the system. Once the leaks are identified and the repairs are performed to stop them, we will recharge the AC to the proper refrigerant level to make sure the system is blowing ice cold. To be clear, the cost of repairing leaking parts is not included in our standard charge for this service.

Environmental Impact of Air Conditioners

R-12, R-134A, and HFO-1234yf are refrigerants used in vehicle air conditioning equipment are made of a class of chemicals called hydrofluorocarbons are potent greenhouse gases. When hydrochlorofluorocarbons leak out of your vehicle’s A/C system, they greatly accelerate global warming. To mitigate this problem, servicing of motor vehicle air conditioning systems is regulated under section 609 of the Clean Air Act, which prohibits the intentional release of these refrigerants while maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of motor vehicle A/C equipment. Thus, we are required legally (and ethically) to repair any leaks found in the system before permanently recharging the system, so please don’t ask us to just top off your refrigerant.

My A/C Isn’t Blowing at All or It’s Making a Racket

If you are getting partial or no action when you turn on the A/C, or if it’s making strange noises when you turn it on, then something is not copacetic with a mechanical or electrical component of your A/C system. Our ASE  Certified technicians will visually inspect the system and run a series of tests focusing on the serpentine belt, the blower motor, the blower motor resistors, the blend door actuators, the A/C clutch and relay, and the A/C compressor to look for any mechanical or electrical problems.

My A/C Smells Like Stinky Cheese

Vieux Boulogne is a cheese from the French region of Nord-Pas de Calais. It tastes great, but is so stinky that it has been banned from public transportation in France. If your car’s A/C smells like a fragrant cheese, you probably have mold growing in your A/C system.

When your A/C system is turned on, it produces condensation that collects inside the A/C housing. The condensation should naturally drain out, resulting in a small puddle of water that you might see under your car from time to time. If the evaporator drain tube gets clogged, it creates a moist environment that encourages mold, spores, fungi, bacteria, and viruses to grow in your evaporator core. The blower motor forces air through the contaminated evaporator core and out the vents in the passenger compartment.

To eliminate these odors, we use specialty cleaners to remove blockages from the drain tube, and kill anything growing in your A/C system. This service usually runs between $99 and $149 depending on the difficulty of performing these services on your vehicle.

Dirty Cabin Air Filters

Another cause of the funky smell coming from your vents could be from things like food, pets, or cigarette smoke. As the air is recirculated through the cabin, these scents get stuck in the cabin air filter and accumulate over time. Eventually, the air filter becomes so loaded with these odors and clogged with debris that it restricts the airflow and stresses other components in your AC system, shortening their life.

To eliminate these odors, we recommend replacing the cabin air filter , a service which we perform on most cars for $39.99.

Warranty on A/C Repairs and Services

As always, we offer a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty on all automotive repairs, including all services listed here with one exception.
